چکیده

The abundance of both amorphous and crystalline silicates in very small grains is limited by the fact that the 10 mm silicate emission feature is not detected in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). On the basis of the observed IR emission spectrum for the diffuse ISM, the observed ultraviolet extinction curve, and the 10 mm silicate absorption profile, we obtain upper limits on the abundances of ultrasmall ( ) amorphous and ̊ a 15 A crystalline silicate grains. Contrary to previous work, as much as ∼10% of interstellar Si could be in silicate grains without violating observational constraints. Not more than ∼5% of the Si can be in ̊ a 15 A crystalline silicates (of any size). Subject headings: dust, extinction — infrared: ISM: lines and bands — ISM: abundances — ultraviolet: ISM

Trends in the adsorption and reactivity of hydrogen on magnesium silicate nanoclusters.

We study nanoclusters of Mg-rich olivine and pyroxene (having (MgO)6(SiO2)3 and (MgO)4(SiO2)4 compositions) with respect to their reactivity towards hydrogen atoms, using density functional calculations. Ultrasmall silicate particles are fundamental intermediates in cosmic dust grain formation and processing, and are thought to make up a significant mass fraction of the grain population. Due to...

SPECTROPOLARIMETRY OF THE 3.4 m FEATURE IN THE DIFFUSE ISM TOWARD THE GALACTIC CENTER QUINTUPLET CLUSTER

Aliphatic hydrocarbons exhibit an absorption feature at 3.4 m, observed toward sources that sample diffuse regions of the interstellar medium (ISM). The absorbers responsible for this feature are assumed to reside in some component of interstellar dust, but the physical nature of the particles (size, shape, structure, etc.) is uncertain. Observations of interstellar polarization provide discrim...

Interstellar Dust Models Consistent with Extinction, Emission, and Abundance Constraints

We present new interstellar dust models which have been derived by simultaneously fitting the far–ultraviolet to near–infrared extinction, the diffuse infrared (IR) emission and, unlike previous models, the elemental abundance constraints on the dust for different interstellar medium abundances, including solar, F and G star, and B star abundances. The fitting problem is a typical ill-posed inv...

Interstellar Dust Models and Evolutionary Implications

The wavelength dependences of interstellar extinction and polarization, supplemented by observed elemental abundances and the spectrum of infrared emission from dust heated by starlight, strongly constrain dust models. One dust model that appears to be consistent with observations is presented. To reproduce the observed extinction, the model consumes the bulk of interstellar Mg, Si, and Fe (in ...

Interstellar Grains

Overview Submicron solid particles are dispersed through interstellar gas. These interstellar grains absorb and scatter light, thus shielding some regions from ultraviolet radiation, but also limiting our ability to detect photons which have been emitted by astronomical objects. Dust grains reradiate absorbed energy in the in-frared, thus contributing to the overall emission spectrum of astrono...
